Recruit... Retain... Graduate Champions!

While the IUPUI Athletics Department strives for success on and off the field, the department is committed to providing a first-rate athletics experience to all student-athletes. Whereas on the playing fields, championships are measured in terms of wins and losses; off the field, championships are measured by earning a degree from the university.

Those individuals found on the following list are who we recognize as Champions today. Please help us in our effort to graduate new Champions by coming out to a match and cheering on our student-athletes or by contributing to the Jaguars Athletics Club scholarship fund, which helps support our misson of providing scholarships to athletes in all 14 of our current Division I programs.

The IUPUI Intercollegiate Athletics program is committed to providing equal opportunity and an educational and work environment for its student-athletes, coaches and staff free from any discrimination based on gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, age, marital status, physical or mental disability, or veteran status.

Student-Athletes of the Month
Margaret Barber
Margaret Barber
Women's Swimming
IUPUI freshman swimmer Margaret Barber has been chosen the Sahm's Female Student-Athlete of the Month for January. Barber helped the women's swimming and diving team to a 4-1 record in January moving the team's record to 7-1 on the season. The seven dual wins are the most in a single-season in program history.

Barber opened the month shattering the school record in the 1,000 freestyle in a quad meet with Xavier, Saint Louis, and Western Illinois with a winning time of 10:30.82. That time bested the previous school-record time of 10:46.14 set by Sara Smith on Nov. 10, 2006. Later that meet, she posted the fifth-fastest 500 freestyle time with a mark of 5:11.88 en route to a second-place finish.

After posting another win a day later in the 200 freestyle in a dual meet with Eastern Illinois, Barber captured wins in the 200 free and 500 free on Jan. 28 at Oakland. Her 200 freestyle time of 1:54.94 was a PR and equaled the second-fastest swim in the IUPUI record books, while her 500 free time was the seventh-fastest time in program history.
Alex Young
Alex Young
Men's Basketball
IUPUI senior basketball standout Alex Young has been chosen the Sahm's Male Athlete of the Month for the month of January. The Indianapolis-native averaged a team-high 22.1 points and 5.1 boards per game, while also collecting 2.0 assists and 1.4 steals in the Jaguars' eight games.

Young scored in double-digits in all eight games, including six games of 20 points or better. He notched back-to-back 27-point outings against Oral Roberts (Jan. 14) and at South Dakota (Jan. 19) for his high water marks during the month. Against Southern Utah on Jan. 12, Young became the 3rd player in IUPUI history to eclipse the 2,000 point mark with a free throw late in the first half.

The 6-foot-6 lefty has since climbed to No. 7 on The Summit League's all-time scoring list and remains the top active scorer in all of Division I men's basketball. For the year, Young is averaging a team-high 20.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while hitting 41 percent from the field. He also leads the team with 34 steals and 26 blocked shots and ranks among The Summit League leaders by having hit 81.9 percent from the free throw line.
