Austin Montgomery inside The Jungle

The Jungle (IUPUI Gymnasium) was opened in 1982 and is the home to the IUPUI basketball and volleyball teams. Located on the main concourse of the IU Natatorium, the facility provides the Jaguars' teams a distinct home court advantage.

After receiving a major facelift in the summer of 2007, the capacity has decreased to 1,215, but provides an up-close perspective of NCAA Division I competition. New chair back seating was installed on both sides of the court, similar to those found at Conseco Fieldhouse or the newly constructed Lucas Oil Stadium.

Both the north and south walls depict a mural, displaying the best and brightest athletes to don IUPUI uniforms. The North wall includes shots of IUPUI Hall of Famer Carlos Knox, along with former women's standouts Tiffany Kyser and Brooke McAfee.

Additionally, a photo of former volleyball standout Rebekah Pallikan spans a portion of the wall, while two shots commemorate the 2003 IUPUI basketball team, which won the program's first-ever Mid-Continent Conference crown.

The South wall includes a mural of current IUPUI standouts George Hill, Jernisha Cann and Devika Bellamy, among others.

Banners hang from the rafters, honoring IUPUI's championship teams, dating back to the program's NAIA days. The facility also boasts two wireless scoreboards in each end zone and a state of the art sound system.

Alex Young
Alex Young
Men's Basketball
IUPUI senior basketball standout Alex Young has been chosen the Sahm's Male Athlete of the Month for the month of January. The Indianapolis-native averaged a team-high 22.1 points and 5.1 boards per game, while also collecting 2.0 assists and 1.4 steals in the Jaguars' eight games.

Young scored in double-digits in all eight games, including six games of 20 points or better. He notched back-to-back 27-point outings against Oral Roberts (Jan. 14) and at South Dakota (Jan. 19) for his high water marks during the month. Against Southern Utah on Jan. 12, Young became the 3rd player in IUPUI history to eclipse the 2,000 point mark with a free throw late in the first half.

The 6-foot-6 lefty has since climbed to No. 7 on The Summit League's all-time scoring list and remains the top active scorer in all of Division I men's basketball. For the year, Young is averaging a team-high 20.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while hitting 41 percent from the field. He also leads the team with 34 steals and 26 blocked shots and ranks among The Summit League leaders by having hit 81.9 percent from the free throw line.

Women's Swimming
IUPUI freshman swimmer Margaret Barber has been chosen the Sahm's Female Student-Athlete of the Month for January. Barber helped the women's swimming and diving team to a 4-1 record in January moving the team's record to 7-1 on the season. The seven dual wins are the most in a single-season in program history.

Barber opened the month shattering the school record in the 1,000 freestyle in a quad meet with Xavier, Saint Louis, and Western Illinois with a winning time of 10:30.82. That time bested the previous school-record time of 10:46.14 set by Sara Smith on Nov. 10, 2006. Later that meet, she posted the fifth-fastest 500 freestyle time with a mark of 5:11.88 en route to a second-place finish.

After posting another win a day later in the 200 freestyle in a dual meet with Eastern Illinois, Barber captured wins in the 200 free and 500 free on Jan. 28 at Oakland. Her 200 freestyle time of 1:54.94 was a PR and equaled the second-fastest swim in the IUPUI record books, while her 500 free time was the seventh-fastest time in program history.
