INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's golf team shot a season-best 305 and sit five shots off the lead at the midpoint of this week's Butler Fall Invitational, being played at the par-70 Highland Country Club on the city's near Northside. Bowling Green State leads the 11-team field after shooting 300 on Monday (Oct. 8) while IUPUI is tied with both Bradley and Eastern Illinois at 305. Indiana State rounds out the top five at 309.
"Let's go, let's go win a golf tournament," IUPUI Head Coach John Andrews
said. "They're experienced, so now I say let's go win a golf tournament.
"We're five shots back, so 300 should probably be the goal for tomorrow, and that's attainable. We're playing the golf course, not the other teams."
IUPUI senior Jordan Woods
led the Jaguars on Monday, shooting an opening round 75 as she is tied for eighth among the 67-player field.
"Three days ago, I didn't know where I was hitting the ball. Today, I didn't hit my typical shot shape, but that's okay," Woods said. "I made some good up-and-downs. I would've liked to make some more birdies, given the number of fairways I hit, but it's playing long and I didn't really have a ton of birdie opportunities."
IUPUI used a balanced attack to stay in the hunt as both senior Jordan Essman
and sophomore Yuri Otsuka
shot 76. For Essman, it was her best round of the season while Otsuka matched her best round of the season.
Sophomore Kelli Witt
made the most of her first career appearance in the Jaguars' lineup, carding an 8-over 78 while senior Lauren Kuss
closed at 81. Witt is the third different IUPUI player to have played in the Jaguars' No. 5 spot this year, joining both Maria Krempp
and Carolyn Kupchik
among those vying for a position.
"It was awesome," Woods said of Witt's effort. "We knew Kelli was still in the hunt. As a player, it was great to have that reassurance and it takes a weight off your shoulders."
"Witt played well," Andrews said. "I was very pleased with how she played."
Krempp led IUPUI's three individual entries on Monday, shooting an 81 while sophomore Lauren Mains
shot an 84. BGSU's Shelby Wilson leads the field after a 1-over 71 and Bradley's Danielle Lemek is second at 72.
Play will conclude with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start as the Jaguars will be paired with BGSU and Bradley on Tuesday.
