AKRON, Ohio -- The IUPUI women's basketball team will look for their third straight season-opening win at a Mid-American Conference opponent when they take on Akron on Friday, Nov. 13 at 12 p.m.. The Jaguars have opened two of the last three seasons with victories in the home of MAC foes.
IUPUI will look to break in nine newcomers to the lineup in their first few games, as four starters from their exhibition game -
Briannica Tye,
Jessica Huffman,
Kerah Nelson and
Ebony Davis - did not play a minute for the Jaguars last season. Co-captain
Janna Eichelberger was the one starter who did play for the Jags in 2008-09, as she started 17 contests a year ago.
Gretchen Gaskin,
Clara Mitchell,
Alyse Poindexter,
Alexis Taylor and
Mariah Fleming will compose the rest of the newcomer class for IUPUI; Fleming led the Jaguars with 16 points in their exhibition game, knocking down 6-of-7 field goals to pace IUPUI.
Once again, the Jags will look to
Julia Whitted on the inside, as she earned Preseaon First Team All-Summit honors for the second straight year. Between Whitted, Eichelberger,
Elizabeth Mercer and
Farren Stackhouse, IUPUI returns 30 percent of their minutes played from 2008-09.
Akron took down Ashland, 80-47, in their lone exhibition contest; the Zips are coming off their best season in nine years, finishing with an 11-19 record. Akron will rely on Kara Murphy for the balance of their offense; the junior averaged 19 points per game last year and picked up All-MAC Preseason Team honors prior to the beginning of this season.
