INDIANAPOLIS -- The IUPUI Department of Athletics and head volleyball coach Steve Payne have announced the team’s schedule for the upcoming 2008 season. The Jaguars will be hosting the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational for the third consecutive year and will take on three teams which reached the NCAA Tournament in 2007.
IUPUI will open play will their traditional alumni match before beginning the regular season with the third annual IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational over Labor Day weekend. In their first match of the year, the Jaguars will face the Golden Hurricane of the University of Tulsa, who won the Conference USA Tournament a year ago to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Payne’s squad will also take on Jacksonville State and Evansville in the tournament, which runs from Aug. 30-31.
"Our opening tournaments will be very challenging and prepare us for Summit League play," Payne stated. "All three tournaments feature teams that should be at the top of their respective conferences this year."
The following weekend, the Jaguars will travel to Memphis, Tenn., to face off against Memphis, Troy, Iona and Indiana State over two days during the tournament.
In their third tournament of the year, IUPUI will take part in the University of Wisconsin’s four-team round-robin, playing Central Michigan, Boise State and Wisconsin. The Badgers were the seventh national seed in the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
As part of a schedule that will see the Jaguars take on six teams from Indiana, IUPUI will travel to Ball State (Sept. 9) and Butler (Sept. 16). The Jags will take on Valparaiso (Oct. 21) and see IPFW twice in Summit League play along with games against Evansville and Indiana State.
The Jaguars will continue their series with perennial Big East contender Cincinnati on Sept. 23 with a game in the Queen City.
IUPUI will begin Summit League play with a match against Centenary on Sept. 19 before entering into the teeth of conference play the following weekend. The Jaguars will wrap up the year with four straight road matches before The Summit League Championships, which will be Nov. 21-22 in Tulsa, Okla..
IUPUI returns four starters to a squad that narrowly missed qualifying for The Summit League Tournament in 2007. Senior Chelsea Bastin will lead the Jaguars on the back row, while juniors Monica Suding, Danielle Goodnight and Ashley Johnson will be counted on up front.
