Vanessa Carna and Emily Holsapple cap undefeated weekends at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively

INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker in the finale of its Summit League cluster at the Indianapolis Tennis Center on Sunday morning. The match came down to a marathon battle at the No. 6 singles spot where UMKC's Nicole Kofron outlasted IUPUI's Lisa Gebhard in a 6-0, 5-7, 7-5 thriller.

After the Jags won the doubles point by getting wins at No. 1 from Andrea Burkhardt and Emily Holsapple and at No. 3 from Dana Gardner and Allison Thompson.

UMKC pulled even early in singles play as Holly Davis dispatched of Gardner in the No. 5 spot and Emily Lindsay knocked off Thompson at the top spot. Holsapple capped an undefeated weekend at the No. 4 spot in the lineup with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Caitlin Burke.

Junior Vanessa Carna gave the Jags a 3-2 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 to also complete a perfect weekend. However, the Kangaroos evened the score at No. 2 as Chelsea Horner beat Burkhardt 6-3, 7-5, leaving the match in the hands of the No. 6 players.

Gebhard used her aggressive style to battle back to split sets. After losing 6-0 in the first and trailing 3-2 in the second, the former soccer standout came to life using an array of forehands and overheads. In the third, neither player was able to build more than a two-game lead on the opposition as Kofron rallied late to seal the match.

Kofron was able to hold serve to make it 6-5 and broke Gebhard's service game to collect the victory. Kofron and Gebhard's match went on for approximately 75 minutes after the other five courts had concluded.

IUPUI closed the weekend with one win in four matches and capped its conference season with a 2-6 mark. The Jaguars will return to action on April 16 when they travel to Butler University for a 3:00 p.m. dual.
